1. Presentation
Introduction
Clip-in filters are filters you insert inside the camera body in front of the sensor and the shutter. The are clipped in the cage of the camera. Once inserted they are perfectly adjusted and do not move at all
The key advantage is that they are valid for any type of lens from a Laowa 9mm F5.6 to a Sony 600mm F4, whatever the filter size , the shape of the front lens or if there is a rear filter (like on the Sony 12-24mm F2.8 GM) or Drop in filter possible like on the Sony 400mm F2.8 GM OSS)
They are very light , protect the sensor when changing lens, their price is reasonable (around 82 euros each)

The key disadvantage is that their installation require a calm , dust free , non windy environment , so not very suited for on the field installation
Many people will be afraid or being so close to the sensor when installing those filters but after 2-3 minutes you get familiar with them and you can install / remove the clip in filter in less than 20 seconds

The Kase clip-in filters
The Kase clip-in filters exist in kit (266 euros) or individually (82 euros), they are compatible with all Sony full frame cameras (from A7 – A7II – A7III, to A7RIV) but not with APSC ones

Each of them weight 3.3g and is made of B270 glass and is surrounded by an Aluminum frame
Their multiple coatings made them water /oil / dirt repellent

The Kit (266 euros) include a set of ND Filters + MCUV
MCUV : Multi coated UV filter = protective transparent filter
ND 0.9, 8x
ND 1.8, 64x
ND 3.0, 1000x
There is also
Light pollution (82 euros). This filter cut some part of the spectrum to eliminate light pollution due to city lights and that can give a yellowish cast to the images
ND 1.5 32x (82 euros)
Filters are delivered with a plastic case , and with a small tool like a guitar plectrum (to install/remove) & a cotton black gasket for long exposure

2. Setup
The below video is showing for each filter type : ND, Light pollution , MCUV (Clear filter for sensor protection)

the installation and removal of the filter
a test on color neutrality and sharpness
The video will be both in English and French

Installation
Below operations should be done in a calm, dust free and non windy environment. The whole operation takes 20 seconds (check the video to see it in action)

Install yourself in a clean , calm, dust free, non windy environment
Prepare the body and filter on a table
Remove the lens / body cap
The filter need to be inserted with the Kase lettering facing the sensor and the half circle at the bottom
Hold the filter by the top and insert the filter with a 45° angle ( bottom part down)
Gently move down the top part
Use the triangle tool (like a guitar plectrum) to push the top part down , you will hear a click
To remove : use also the triangle tool to gently remove it by the top part
If you are afraid of touching the glass of the filter you can use some latex gloves to manipulate them. There are some orange finger gloves normally provided (I did not had them in my test unit) but you can use any standard medical gloves if you want

There is also a cotton black gasket for long exposure to be placed before the filter. This one is a bit more tedious to install, and I did not see any difference with or without it during my test. Maybe it could be useful for very long exposure (15-20min)

3. Filters Neutrality & quality
To test the neutrality of the filters I have taken a photo of a color chart after having set manually the white balance of my photo, then I have taken taken the same picture with the filters. If the filters are neutral, colors should be exactly the same.

I also tested the effect on the sharpness, to see if the filter would degrade the sharpness

Here are the conclusions
MCUV zero color shift , zero degradation of quality, zero vignetting
ND 0.9, 8x zero color shift , zero degradation of quality, zero vignetting
ND 1.5, 32x zero color shift , zero degradation of quality, zero vignetting
ND 3.0, 1000x zero color shift , zero degradation of quality, zero vignetting
Light Pollution : color shift to blue(as expected for a filter that filter yellowish lights), zero degradation of quality, zero vignetting
So perfect results

I also tested the cotton black gasket together with the ND1000 , as it is supposed to be used for long exposure to reduce any light leaks. I did not see any difference as the results was already perfect without it. Maybe in case of very long exposure over 15min it could be required
AF was also working fine , provided there was sufficient light. With the ND1000 , I did a manual focusing using the “Bright Monitoring” function of the Alpha camera

Outdoor testing
The weather being really awful during several weeks (constant raining and cloudy ) I did not had the opportunity to make outdoor testing. But as quality is identical to their other Kase Filters , please consult my other Kase filter tests for some sample photos outdoor

I will add some photos later when the good weather will be back

4 Conclusion
The Kase clip-in filters (82 euros/each or in kit) are a very nice series of filters : installation is easy (see the video) and quality is excellent (color neutral / no vignetting / no loss of sharpness).

The first time you need to go over your fear of touching/damaging the sensor. I am not particularly good at manipulating small objects , but I had zero issues with those filters. They were installed in 20 seconds. They are much less intrusive for me than using a sensor swab to clean your sensor
By definition they are compatible with all lenses as they are installed within your camera and not on the lenses

The MCUV = Multicoated UV filter is maybe the most interesting one : This filter is a transparent protection filter that will have no effect on your images but that will protect your sensor from any dust. So if like most Sony Alpha 7/9 camera users you get frequent dust on your sensor, you can install it on a permanent basis to protect your sensor when changing lenses.
If you just need ND filter , the Kase clip-in ND filters will avoid you to buy costly filter holder system for wide angle lens or multiple ND filters for each filter size.

With the various ND available you can cover most needs
ND8 for video to be able to shoot at a correct speed , wide open with bright sunlight from the
ND64 – ND1000 for long exposure
The Light pollution filter will also please all night shooters , once installed you can use it with all lenses you have brought with you

Pros
Easy installation / removal in less than 20 seconds
Color neutral
No Vignetting
No loss of sharpness
AF and manual focusing works perfectly
Compatible with all lenses
Light (3.3g ) , compact and robust (aluminium frame)
Compatible with all Full frame Sony cameras from A7 mark I to the A7SIII / A1
Reasonable price (82 euros each)
Provided with all required accessories : protection box, installation tool, gloves
MCUV is awesome to protect your sensor from dust
Small ND8 / ND16 can be used also for video to shoot wide open on a sunny day
Light pollution filter will please all Night shooters : One filter for all your lenses
Oil and water repellend nano coating
Easy to clean

Cons
Installation require clean /dust free non windy environment preferably on a table (if not then a tripod will be ok to change filter on the field)
Does not replace a graduated ND or a CPL for which you will still need a filter holder system or traditional circular filter
Black cotton gasket , not so easy to install and quite useless for most of the cases (I did not see the need of it during my testing with long pause, so not an issue)

Remarks
No version for APSC
If you use a manual lens with a distance scale don’t trust the infinity mark for shooting at infinity as the focus distance is a little bit influenced by the filter, you better use the focus magnifier. (Zero issue when using AF or focus magnifier in MF)
You can buy them on their Kase Filters Benelux shop here

Highly recommended
